Dental products that protect young smiles
Nothing beats the joy of your child's smile. Keep those pearly whites bright and healthy with the right dental products at every stage of their development.
Babies
Start oral care even before teeth appear. Simply use a clean washcloth to wipe your baby's gums after feedings. Avoid cloths with loose threads to ensure safety.
Baby teeth usually start appearing around 6 to 12 months. To care for baby teeth:
- Grab a soft-bristled baby toothbrush that fits comfortably in their mouth.
- Use a tiny dab of fluoride toothpaste — just the size of a grain of rice. Any flavor is fine, so get whatever your child likes best.
Toddlers
As your child grows, the color and flavor of their oral health products can keep them excited about cleaning their teeth. Let your child choose their favorite flavor or color of toothpaste, just as long as it contains fluoride.
You’ll also want to purchase floss, floss picks, or a water flosser once your child’s teeth fit closely together, typically between the ages of 2 and 6.
Fluoride is vital for lifelong oral health. If your tap water isn’t fluoridated, ask your dentist whether you should use a fluoride supplement.
Age 6 and older
Around age 6, your child’s baby teeth start falling out to make way for their permanent teeth. Keep these tips in mind:
- Look at the age guidelines on the toothbrush you buy and make sure it has a small head that fits your child’s mouth.
- Get a well-fitted mouth guard and other protective gear when they’re ready to play sports.
Dental sealants aren’t a product you can buy over the counter, but they do protect your child’s back teeth from decay. Talk to your dentist about the right time to apply them.
Maintaining oral health is a lifelong process. Use the right dental products at each stage of development and set your child up for a lifetime of healthy smiles.
