When should I use teledentistry?
Virtual dentistry brings the dental office to you
When you can’t travel to a dentist’s office for care, a virtual online visit can be a helpful alternative. Delta Dental offers two teledentistry innovations you can use to connect with your dentist and discuss minor or serious issues in real time.
With Toothpic, you can get a checkup remotely from an in-network Delta Dental dentist for evaluating minor issues, such as irritation or sensitivity, or an overall oral health evaluation. Likewise, with the web-based browser platform Virtual Consult, you can speak directly with a dentist about issues that cause pain or discomfort.
A teledentistry visit provides an effective option when you can’t visit the dentist office due to:
-
Safety concerns (such as a public health threat)
-
Distance (when the office is too far away)
-
Limited office hours (closure for evenings, weekends or holidays)
-
Schedule conflicts (work or household responsibilities)
-
Don’t have a regular dentist
Is teledentistry covered by my plan benefits?
Toothpic and Virtual Consult are available to you as a covered, no-cost benefit if you:
-
Have Delta Dental PPO™ or Delta Dental Premier®
-
Have 100% in-network coverage for oral evaluations
-
Haven’t exceeded your annual maximum (virtual visits won’t count against your plan-year maximums if your plan has a D&P Maximum Waiver®)
Toothpic is also available as a covered benefit if you don’t have 100% diagnostic and preventive coverage. If your plan doesn’t cover the entire cost of the visit, Toothpic will calculate what you owe at the time of service. Virtual visits don’t count against your in-office visits.
How do I use Toothpic?
Toothpic is a photo-based virtual dentistry app that allows you to consult remotely with a Delta Dental dentist:
- You answer a few questions about your oral health history and reason for your visit.
- The app will help you take six photos of your teeth, gums and concern areas.
- Your case and photos are sent to a nearby Delta Dental dentist for review.
- In less than 24 hours, you'll get a personalized diagnostic report on your results, with photos marked for issues discussed.
You can register for Toothpic online by creating your account and downloading the app. Then, open Toothpic and log in to your account to get started!
How do I use Virtual Consult?
Through the Virtual Consult platform, you can connect with a Delta Dental dentist to discuss urgent issues, such as severe tooth or jaw pain, bleeding or swollen gums, abscesses or growths or damage from an injury.
Navigate online to the Virtual Consult portal to gain access with these steps:
- Create an account and enter your Delta Dental insurance information.
- Schedule your video consultation.
- Answer a few questions about your issue and health history.
- Connect in real time with a Delta Dental dentist near you.
You’ll then be able to describe problems and express your concerns as you would during an in-office visit.
Are my privacy and confidentiality protected?
Both teledentistry solutions are compliant with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Your privacy and confidentiality are protected according to HIPAA regulations. Videos of consultations aren’t saved, and your information is encrypted and safe.
You can confidently access these solutions to receive virtual care from a Delta Dental dentist in a timely, secure way.
Can my family members use this technology?

Children can be added to your account to use Virtual Consult, and you can set up new email accounts for them, using your member ID number, so they can use Toothpic. Each adult dependent can use your enrollee ID number to create a new account with a unique email address.
The convenience and flexibility of virtual dentistry help you get the most out of your plan benefits and makes keeping a healthy smile easier than ever. Be sure to take advantage of Toothpic and Virtual Consult to take control of your oral health with the latest technology.
